Cristine Sundquist

Cristine Sundquist of Independence, Kansas had 30 plus pastel paintings on display from October 1st through the 12th. A special reception was scheduled for October 4th at 6:30 PM in the Gallery of the Independence Historical Museum and Art Center. The Museum & Art Center is located at 123 N. 8th in Independence, KS. For more information call 620-331-3515.

Originally from St. Louis, Cristine has studied drawing and painting from the age of 12. Her early art education came from private art instructors and workshops at Washington University and the St. Louis Art Museum. She later studied Fine Arts and Art Education at the University of Kansas. Her appreciation for the uniqueness of people, as well as nature, is conveyed in each portrait or landscape painting. Cristine has a constant fascination with solving the problems of light, composition, and color in each painting and drawing endeavor.

Cristine works mainly in Pastels. This is the application of thousands of strokes and many, many layers of pure pigment on highly textured and sanded surfaces. Cristine has won several awards for her pastel paintings. During October and November her work will be part of a juried exhibit at the Buttonwood ArtSpace in Kansas City called "Visions of the Flint Hills." In addition to working as an artist she offers private instruction as well as classes to both children and adults.
